Sometimes when I hear the word heal or healing, it gives me that same wishy washy vibe as the words nurturing or nourish. I’m not sure, but certain words just seem flakey, don’t they?
We all have words. When I was little, I really didn’t like the words semblable (French for similar) or the name Shelly (I’m so sorry if your name is Shelly. I’m over it now).
Some words or phrases get imbued with a specific energy or maybe it’s just that they become buzz words and then seem devoid of any truth. I don’t think semblable was ever a buzz word, I just didn’t like the compact consonants.
Now though, I’m using the word healing a lot and I want to make sure that it doesn’t go the way of Shelly. It’s a really powerful word and I think it deserves very serious attention.
What is healing?
Healing is about letting go of all the shit that’s happened, it’s about recognition and forgiveness, even when sorry hasn’t been said. Healing is about giving pain, trauma and old hurt its time so that it can pass and then you can be free of it.
It’s wild but it’s true. If something awful happens and we don’t process it, if we don’t do the work to move through it, to feel it and let it go, well it gets trapped inside our bodies and souls. Patterns develop, ways of seeing the world become crystallised and without any awareness, past life events colour and seep into the present moment.
Have you ever asked yourself why this or that bothers you so much? Why you have a tendency to be this way or that way inclined?
In doing my own work, I’ve learned so much about the way past events have shaped my current behaviours and habits. It’s amazing to uncover this, like finding old relics in an archaeologic dig made up by the unfolding events of this life.
Healing is about getting to know yourself. It’s also about recognising that behaviours, patterns and tendencies - well, they’re learned; they’re not intrinsically you. You are actually pure and expansive. You needn’t be defined by these imprints that have left their mark on your life. You can heal yourself and move forward. You can let go of all that stuff that doesn’t serve you.
Is it easy? No. Will some people never be free from their suffering. Perhaps. Because it all starts with awareness and curiosity. You must be curious about yourself, willing to deconstruct your life and to do the work - and man, there’s a lot of work to do. And it’s exciting and interesting and liberating and terrifying, all at the same time.
So why do you need to heal?
The same reason we all do. Because stuff has happened that hasn’t always been good. You’ve kept some of that stuff tight inside of you and at some point, you can either choose to let it go or cement it into your psyche.
Yoga teaches us that we can move deeply inside and find answers. That in silence, presence and sinking in, there is space to connect to truth and to peel back the layers of who we think we are.
Healing isn’t just about wearing a bandaid or mending a broken bone.
There are many ways to approach healing. The practice of yoga, meditation, body work, sound work, journalling and creativity are some modalities that I believe in. There are people who specialise in healing work, like me, who spend time with people one-on-one to explore emotions, embodiment and possibility.
Something very profound that I’ve learned through the process of doing healing work, is knowing that old stuff doesn’t need to be rehashed. It’s not about reliving or diving into the why and how. It’s more about getting into the body and mind, finding where these old hurts have set up shop and then creating safe space for release and exploration. It’s about talking, moving, breathing and being with whatever needs to be let go so that you can heal and thrive.
We all have stuff we don’t need any longer. The hardest and most rewarding thing is to start doing the work. This life is far too short to choose to turn a blind eye. It takes an eff load amount of courage to choose to look within and to let go. I encourage you to do this so that you can live the life that you deserve to live and to be the most extraordinary version of yourself. Start now. Don't wait. You must choose to heal.
