He was hiding behind the sofa the whole time.
That joke killed me as a kid. As if in a game of hide-and-seek, I loved the image of Jesus Christ crouching behind an old chesterfield, just waiting to be found. It was funniest because it seemed so absurd. This great big majestic holy being in my house, behind my sofa.
So often I hear, yoga is not religious: "Don't worry, there's no hokus pokus, it's just breathing and poses." People spend so much time sterilizing yoga, paring it down, getting rid of the Godliness. But if yoga is not religious, then I don't know what is.
Without God, Yoga does not exist because God is everything.
Someone asked me once, "what does God mean to you." I said without hesitation, "God is everything." She was surprised, "I didn't know you were so religious." I smiled, "It is not just that God is everything, it is that everything is God. God is you, it is me, God is that book and that plant. God is everything."
When you believe that God is everything then the faces' of strangers become sweeter, animals' lives matter, trees matter, the person who cuts you off in traffic, they matter. When you believe that God is everything then you matter. Your life, your days, the words you speak, the decisions you make - they are all a part of a divine thread that ties every life form into the same heavenly web.
Yoga must be a kind of religion because so many journey down its path with such great devotion.
In this light, religion goes beyond worship and God becomes far greater than any one denomination Yoga is a way to shed the materiality of this life by fully embracing this life. Fear slips away and the innate Godliness inside is revealed. Equanimity replaces the ups and downs, and love and good health seep from the eyes, skin and heart. The practice of yoga shows that letting go is the way to freedom and that non-attachment is the way to true success and undeniable happiness.
Let the Godliness of your practice, of the moments that make of your life, be revealed to you. God doesn't have to be scary or oppressive or singular. God can be the beauty and truth in everything and everyone.
Everyday, be God. See God. Om Namah Shivaya. I bow to Lord Shiva, the supreme reality, the true Self.
